war-thunder

Some free-to-play games are more polarizing than others, with some sides taking the stance of “great, totally non-exploitative implementation” and others thinking “total pay-to-win trash.” We’d like to see on what side of the spectrum the gaming public — and by that, we mean you guys — think of certain F2P games, and so we’ve invented something new called Love It Or Hate It?

Every week, we’ll present a new F2P game and give you the option of passing judgment on it. Then we’ll look back at it the next week and see what people thought. There are no prizes, except for the satisfaction of knowing you clicked on a button and made something happen. Really, what else do you need?

Last week, we asked if you gave thanks for World of Tanks, and the result was fairly positive. 33% of you said yes, 22% said no, and 45% had no strong feelings one way or the other. Personally, I’ve gone through love/hate relationships with WoT through the years, so maybe it shouldn’t have come as a great surprise.

This week, we’re shifting gears, but only slightly, to see what you think of one of World of Tanks’ major competitors: Gaijin Entertainment’s War Thunder.

Pros: Smooth controls, great arcade-y feel, multiple vehicles per battle means you’ll be engaged longer.

Cons: Lacks realism, localization is iffy.

So what do you think? Yea or nay for War Thunder? As always, feel free to leave a comment to let us know why you voted the way you did!

Do NOT play this game. I love it so much it is hard to stop playing. it is hard to stop playing because I get so frustrated that the ballistics they show you (that are mostlyh accurate) never happen. Stuff you should be killing doesn’t die. You die instead. EX. I just shot an M4 105mm Sherman in the side with my m4 105mm Sherman. he didn’t die..but he killed me. Yes, yes, I know that is combat…COULD happen. But to me it happens 90% of the time. I had a JPZ IV 75 l70 gun..penetrates 189mm armor. I shoot tanks with half that, at all angles and it bounces off. My 122mm JS2 gun…bounces off t34’s with 45 mm armor, yet his crappy gun kills my JS2, one of the best end of war tanks. It goes on and on and I am not exaggerating. I was an armor crewman in the US army and this game is beautiful, when it works right it is incredibly fun, but it upsets me so much because it SHOULD work all the time and it just never reaches its potential. I always play ‘just one more game’ hoping I can actually kill things I hit, like they kill me, and it doesn’t happen and I get pissed more and more. Don’t even start with the matching system. 90% of the time I am matched with tanks well above my level, but NEVER below my level. I don’t know if I am on some shitlist of theirs or what, but it is unfair and it sucks ass. I am going to delete the game because it just pisses me off too much and won’t do as promised.

Like it but kind of tired – it can be quite repetitive.

Well the game is pretty bad. You should get the hint when they put bi planes against single engine dog fighters and jets…yeah…because that is fair. They have HUGE balancing issues and to make up for it, if you like bi planes, you would want to stick to ONE nation (Japanese) because of the faster turn time. Turning and fire power is what wins the game, the slower the turn, the deader you are unless you are a bomber. You can find a decent dog fight here and there, but majority is cash shoppers that “zoom and boom”. They pic the fastest fighter, zoom higher than you, drop in full kenetic energy and 2 shot you.
In the event you are skilled like me, and you can survive and shake people off, and then swing back on them to open fire, you will see the fail in this game. As you fire off round after round and see the +10 + 5 + 15 + 13 and you get coins for “damaging”. Which is nice, but you will soon realize that its like shooting a brick wall with a BB gun, just toying with the other player and you will sit there firing all day long no death. Meanwhile you will get 2 shot. This is due to rank 4 in rank 1 and 2 matches etc. Higher armored hulls vs your top fighter = bad. Throw all this in a pot and yes, you can have a “cool dog” fight, but it feels stupid and un balanced MAJORITY of the time. They have not installed a “bi planes vs bi planes” mode. They have not installed a bamanced tier mode. They charge a lot. They have not installed a WW2 mode.

You are obviously absolutely clueless and you didn’t even scratch the surface of the game. You talk only about biplanes which is like 1% of the whole game.

Rank 4 in rank 1-2 matches?
Sure thing, Mustangs are flying vs biplanes on a daily basis in War Thunder.
Stop making fool out of yourself, your comment is super stupid.

    • Elvenwolf on April 8, 2015

Playing for 10 min in a”bi-plane” does not equate expert knowledge of a game, nor does bi-planes represent the quality of the whole game.

“Tanks and planes YAY” NO! It is false. Tank mode is SEPERATE AND HAS NOTHING TO DO WIHT PLANES. There is a AIR STRIKE CALL that works like a CALL OF DUTY SKILL, where, at certain points, if you have it equipped, you can call an air strike (like a dog strike in CoD) you leave your TANK (yes leave it sitting there parked in the field) and are teleproted into a airplane. You do not chose the plane, it is just a PERK plane used. You have about 20 seconds to GUN, not bomb, but gun the enemy down getting more of that useless +15 +20 pointage. You can ram, everyone tries, it does nothing to tanks….I see so many fail people say “YOu can have real sky battles and tank battles!” no, not working as intended. They have yet to fuse the two game modes entirely. Your planes you use and build ARE NOT used in tank mode. And vice versa.
Stay away, they are not changing any time soon. Go with Star COnflict; WAYYYY better balance and over all game experience.

Sorry Jason but you lost it with this one…lacks realizim, well it IS a game but it has far more realizim that you give it credit for, the only thing i can think of is the possible times in tank battles where tank physics are a bit derpy BUT on the whole it has a briliant simulation mode.

Saying that i just can’t get into it.
I know there are a fair few problems with how the game matchmakes and then there is the fail developpment choices the seem to be making(sim battles in arcade maps)

    • Shanex on April 8, 2015

I don’t see why he said it “Lacks realism” seeing how there are no health bars, unlike world of tanks, and historical and simulation battles are pretty sim, sometimes derpy on things but to say it lacks realism either means he mainly played arcade or he thinks WoT and all those games are “real sim” even though it has health bars. I say again war thunder doesn’t have health bars, but a real damage model.

  9. Tejdzik on April 8, 2015

Jason Winter, oh dear god the mistake you’ve made by saying “lacks realism”… you have no idea. Why would you do that ? Did you even try landing a plane on simulator difficulty ? Anyway it’s just a f2p game, but one that pays much more attention to detail than WoT. This game never wanted to be a simulator, but it still does a good job at it ! And they also do not neglect actual history, look at their news page ! So much you can learn, the historical events are awesome. WoT is just arcade, a game. WarThunder is SO much more. The devs clearly put their hearts into the game.

WT is a friggin yay all the way, there’s so much options and so much to do in just one free game ! And they’re not even done with it yet, so much huge updates to come. Never in my years of online gaming since 1999 have I came across a free game like this that I actually spend money on because I feel they deserve every penny and I want it to go even further.

“Cons: Lacks realism, localization is iffy.”
    HAHA! U so funny!

  11. samael on April 7, 2015

Lacks realism? obviously you know nothing of tankery or planes. how the vehicles operate or fire is more realistic than wot or wowp. the author might have “game” experience but def is lacking in knowing realism.

    • Oh sammy poo on April 7, 2015

You need to add realism to your Engrish lol.

Definition of Tankery. Adjective for describing the state of motion felt when inside a poorly-maintained bus. A rickety, skittery, juddering trajectory.

      cool story bro

  12. Elvenwolf on April 7, 2015

WarThunder and lack of realism? Someone didn’t explore more than 5 min in the hanger UI. Tsk tsk. WarThunder offers 3 different gamestyle, arcade, realism and simulation. Please test those before claiming they lack of realism. If anyone lack realism its WoWp, but that just me. /rant

Both games have their own unique strength and weaknesses, both on ground and in the air. It is more of a preference of what kind of gamer each individual is and what each title has to offer.

Let’s bring both to about same level of game difficulty (around Arcade mode). In Warthunder you can bring multiple tank/planes into same match and you don’t have to spend as much time in queue as WoT or WoWp players do. On same note, WT arcade mode is bit less challenging because if you die in your first or 2nd tank/plane, well you got more, so players tend to be more reckless than a good fighter.

Realism: WT arcade mode is far less realistic by all means as well as compared to WoWp, however WT does offer 2 other difficulties therefor targeting a wide range of audience vs WoT/WoWp. Simulation in WT is full sim game pretty much against other players, WG on the other hand offers fairly well developed ClanWars.

Missions: WT offers both solo and multiplayer in depth Missions with various difficulties. If a group of friends like to enjoy bit of fun among themselves. Where as in WG titles missions primarily do in random matches without any standalone server.

Free XP: WG offers free experience that you own to spend on other vehicles to unlock research and of course allows you converting experience from Elite vehicles to unlock research for small price. Gaijin on the other hand is straight up cashcow when it comes exp conversion and completely denial about free experience.

Crew Training: WG is lacking on in depth crew training vs Gaijin.

At the end of the day, you can go on for hours, days, month debating which one is better or worse. Ultimately it comes down to what each individual prefer and they will play that game and support that title. I personally play both WG and Gaijin titles, depending on what I feel like doing.

Gotta, say personally I’m a world of warplanes fan but after a short time trying war thunder i must admit its better than anything wargaming has to offer in every way, whether you love the skies or the battlefield gaijin has wargaming unarguably trumped as they offer extreme amounts of realism if wanted or an unmatched arcade mode, to sit back and relax in. Compared to war thunder, world of war planes/world of tanks seems like a sloppy, lazy job.Not to say they aren’t good games as i still play WoW frequently, i only argue war thunder is completely better in all ways. please do not flame me wargaming fans… just play war thunder and accept defeat -biddle

  14. bigcracker on April 7, 2015

How is a con that it lacks realism? Does the person playing this not play realistic or simulator?

  15. kandamar on April 7, 2015

Meh… I hoped that it would be the WWII version of Airrivals but still a competitive game.

HAVE SOMETHING TO SAY?
