Laptop... Noooooo!
« on: February 21, 2012, 03:16 PM »
Alright, so I've been absent for a bit because I just lost my laptop (basically the only computer that works in this house; I'm on a temporary rig for the moment) because I sprained my ankle and gave the computer a Mountain Dew bath.

Somewhat like cats, laptops don't like water very much and this caused it to ... spaz out.

Needless to say, crippled my gaming experience and I get to hobble around the house for the experience.

Anyone have any suggestions on what to do while I don't have a machine capable of running any new video games whatsoever? Aren't I glad I didn't decide to buy The Darkness II -- I wouldn't be able to play it right now.

I am thinking of getting into a low rez indy game for the next 2 weeks or maybe play in some lower-requirements MMORPG. Of course, I wouldn't mind spending time with an MMOBomber in one if anyone is up for an outing. :)

Check out Realm of the Mad God on steam. It's F2P and you could play it on an ancient computer.

Oh hey! I've played Realm of the Mad God! I totally forgot that existed... I should go play that again, it held my attention for a few hours IIRC.

You could read a book? Watch some movies or shows? Cure cancer? Invent a remote control that finds itself? Sky's the limit.

Well, on curing cancer I am somewhat burnt out on Foldit -- I'll leave complex protein folding and synthesis to my kaywng, the chemist, I'll stick to writing science fiction about it. I am reading books, I just finished a terrible Star Trek novel and I'm re-reading Foundation and Empire currently.

Movies and shows looks like the alternative today.

What I'm looking for is suggestions of what books or shows or movies to whittle away my time with -- although I did enjoy the cure cancer bit. :)

I see, I see...

Well there's always any Mel Brooks film you haven't seen yet?
You can also go on YouTube and look at nickfromfullhamagain and arseraptor channels.

Read The Bartimaeus Trilogy or Discworld quantofantoentantoenofeno-logy.
Considering your interest you may also give The Night Angel trilogy a go, lots of lore in those.
Or the Maze Runner Trilogy, that one is much like Ender's Game only even more messed up, lots of fun.

Alternatively you can try some anime, my personal favorite being Demon King Daimao and Fairy Tail.

They're great books, admittedly they rely more on pure survival then strategy and intelligence but still, much fun.

"The Rook", is a GREAT book in my opinion.  Many people don't think so, but I loved it ^^.  It has so many twists and such.  I keep getting surprised on who it was actually.  There were two other books that had so many twists in it (these were murder mysteries btw), where one man is convicted of killing a cop, but it turns out it really wasnt him when a witness saw someone with his EXACT height, build, and hair color run away.  And the other book was about this ex-military who is chased by the government, then ends up helping the government by taking down two women, who cut people up, for a picture of two military officers with bin laden, smiling.  Man I LOVE those mystery books...Hope that convinces you to read 'em Amerist.

+1 for Realm of Mad God. Transformice is pretty fun too if you have cool people to play with in the room. Not an MMO though. Both games are on Kongregate.
