You may remember a few months ago we reported that Sony would be converting its MMORPG, Vanguard: Saga of Heroes to a Free-to-Play model. The MMORPG was originally released in 2007 and quickly declined in popularity, although it picked up some steam in recent months after Sony began updating the game more frequently.

Today Sony Online Entertainment revealed that Vanguard would officially launch F2P on Tuesday, August 14th, only a week away! No word yet on what will be changed to fit the new payment model but Sony did state that the developers have been working on improving the game for the F2P launch. Some of the improvements include revamped starting areas and no more class restrictions for any race.

With Bullet Run just releasing, Planetside 2 beta beginning this week, and DC Universe Online as well as the Everquest series already F2P, Sony really seems to be embracing the F2P model as their model of choice.

Will you give Vanguard a try come August 14th? Let us know in the comments below!

so many false rumors.

First:
there are restricted classes. Yes.
But you may play all of those until lvl20 for free to have a look at first. Thats something most f2Ăź don't offer.

Equipment is NOT only white stuff!
You may wear greens and a whole and very numerous bunch of blue ones and yellows too.
All items from the revamped quests are designed for f2p as well.

And the unbind item is now at about 2$ for 5.

Vanguard has more content than 10 other f2p games on the market combined.
So why always cheese about "wahh.. i am restricted..and this in a "free" game!!"

you CAN'T play a f2p game for free. That's why this model is such a successful businessmodel to earn money :P

I don't mind the class/race restrictions to be honest. There's plenty to chose from the free pool and it's a fair thing to charge for in my opinion. But i've been hearing around the net that there are restrictions on the type of equipment you can use in the game. They've been saying that you can only equip common white items and that in order to equip anything above that you must either sub or buy an item from the cash shop that will only remove the restriction from a single item at a time. The item in question is priced at about 5 dollars and can be used a total of 5 times. That just seems totally unreasonable.

Class/race restrictions are all I need to hear, not even going to try and get into the game.
