the game is very competitive and for a new player it can be complicated, but I recommend starting on a new server, doing the tutorial and agreeing to be a member of a guild that is not very competitive so that you can start to understand how defenses work and especially how to use fleets to protection and attacks
it is possible to play without paying and there are good players who do not pay anything, and it is more difficult to detect attacks and improve the bases due to lack of features.
but there it is... even paying for the game is probably the cheapest of its kind

Lots of potential, the game has a free movement system for Fleets adding lots of strategy. I see people complaint about being pay-to-win but i think its unfair as the game only has one biz-model that is the upgrade account for less than $2 a month.

Has been dead for a decade. No updates, dying population, so they spit out more servers for more upgraded accounts. Your account is stunted at 'free' level, cannot compete fairly unless upgraded. Admin's do little to prevent cheating, as the cheating accounts are 'upgraded.' so more income for their pocketbooks. The game has potential, but no effort from cybertopia, only a money grab. Would work wonders if they let the players shape the game.
