The Banner Saga: Factions

The Banner Saga: Factions is a free-to-play 2D turn based tactical strategy game which features stunning hand drawn visuals and animations all set during the Nordic Viking period. In The Banner Saga a player will build a 6 man tactical army with a variety of highly customizable units.

Each unit starts out at rank 0 and can progress to each new rank after killing a certain amount of enemies. As the unit progresses they can be promoted to higher ranks which give them increased stats and new abilities to utilize in battle. A wide array of individual stat points can be re-arranged in order to provide even further tactical options, allowing a player to bolster a unit's defense at the cost of his damage for example. Each unit has a resource called willpower which allows the unit to increase his damage, move farther and utilize special abilities.

Combat in The Banner Saga has each player taking turns moving individual units across the screen towards opponents. A player cannot choose which unit he moves. Instead the server randomly chooses who goes first and in what order the units are arranged. Some units have special abilities which allow them to advance their turn ahead of others. A unit's main two stats are his armor and strength. When attacking an enemy a unit can choose to attack either the armor or strength of an opponent. The more armor an opponent has the less damage dealt. Strength on the other hand is both a unit's health and their damage. As a unit looses its strength, it looses its combat effectiveness and is closer to dying.

Currently players can only participate in matches against other players. The game offers the ability to play against friends using custom turn settings, queue up for normal ranked matches, and a tournament mode with set entry requirements and rules. Players can track their win/loss ratio as well as their current rank using the game's leaderboard system. As players progress, they will accrue renown which they can then use to purchase more units and promote other units to higher ranks.

This is a surprisingly complex "chess" like game. This game is for strategists, thinkers, and, yes, artists. The graphics are hand drawn, I love it! There is a small group of regular players. Most don't give the game a chance because they think there are no other players...... BE a part of the inner circle, stick around. It's a wonderful community and a GREAT game.

Graphics LIE 11 years ago
These graphics requirements are a LIE. I have a 3.0 GHZ processor and a 512MB card and 4G of ram and the graphics constantly stutter and are choppy. I have no problem playing more advanced 3d games but this 2d game plays terrible on my PC. To add to that, there are NO graphics options in this game, either.

Also, there isn't much of a game finished. They just released part of it on Steam. This game is nowhere near complete.
