I like both horizontal and vertical progression, but to keep to the example of early Firefall/Ember if i would have to make a choice i would probably go with horizontal. I think it works better in a open world sandboxy environment and even better for action/shooter mmo's.
I prefer one that is akin to a tree, a tree that spans into a myriad of branches.
But does something like that exist? No.
Because we ever get only one direction, the direction that leads to as much money as possible in somebodys pockets. Dreaming is a dream.
