I think of kickstarter's like donations or service given out of the goodness of your heart. So you don't donate money to Redcross and then turn back and think you were betrayed because they initially didn't use your money for a particular type of reason do you? You donate money in support. Now if you invested and owned a small part of the company, that would be different.

Kickstarter is not a store but people treat it like it is. It is important that the idea being backed remain true to its intended goals but ultimately whats best should be done and the backers need to be ok with that. In the scheme of things, being free to play likely was not the core idea of this project so I don't think the investments were betrayed by the change.
