Get A Peek At The Combat System In Broken Ranks, Get Ready To Make Some Fast Decisions
Also Whitemoon explains the rules for transferring to Taern to BR.
At this point, anyone following Whitemoon’s Broken Ranks is aware that the isometric MMORPG features turn-based combat having been inspired by Heroes of Might & Magic. This is a pretty unusual choice for an MMO and it apparently combines the tactical aspects with a need for “good reflexes”. That’s what the devs say in a post where they explain how the game’s combat system works. And it makes sense seeing as players have 10 seconds per round to choose abilities and assign action points before the enemies just go ahead and do what they’re going to do.
When we’re talking about being fast, we don’t just mean with your hands. You’re going to have to make decisions in those 10 seconds. Not only do you need to decide what ability to use, but you also have to decide how many points to spend on that ability. The more points you use, the higher your chance of success. However, points don’t increase damage done and you only have 12 points to spend. You need to not only decide what you would like to do, but what you think your opponent will do and put those points in the right place.
In order to be really successful at combat, you’re going to need to be aware of things like what kind of enemy you’re fighting. Not all attacks or defense abilities work for everyone. You’ll also need to take into account what the devs refer to as “defense zones”. These are melee, ranged, and mental. Points need to be applied to all of them unless you’d like the enemy to take advantage of a weakness in the ones without points. Similar considerations should be taken when planning attacks. Up to five attacks can be set up per round.
It’s also worth noting that things operate a bit differently between PvE and PvP. That said. PvP is optional with specific zones of the game being dedicated to them.
In additional Broken Ranks news, Whitemoon published a post on how to transfer accounts from The Pride of Taern to Broken Ranks. When Broken Ranks launches, copies of all Taernian servers will be included – down to player progress and everything else they have on their account. Players don’t need to state any intention to transfer servers. It’s going to happen automatically during the downtime beginning January 25. The one exception to this is the Russian Pride of Taern server. It will stay the same.
None of this means that players have to move to Broken Ranks. Rather, they can elect to remain in The Pride of Taern, provided they make that decision within thirty days of logging into their account after Broken Ranks releases. As an added bonus, players can elect to keep different characters in either game and continue to play both. There are no current plans to shut down The Pride of Taern, so players will be good to go there.
