Medusa Skin For Widowmaker Actively Makes Overwatch 2 Harder By Giving Away Your Location
Seems some audio of snake sounds attached to the skin make it almost impossible to hide or hear opponents' footsteps.
First, huge thanks to MMOBomber Yad and his discovering this on Dexerto. We had a huge laugh over it and decided it was just too funny not to report on even though it is something Blizzard will be likely to fix pretty quickly.
We already reported on the god themed, limited time mode that's currently live in Overwatch 2. As part of that event, god themed skins were created for some of the hero shooter's characters. One of those skins was a pretty snazzy Medusa themed skin for Widowmaker. I love the look of it, and other players did too, apparently. Enough that you actually saw the skin in matches.
The problem?
Well, it seems the snakes on the skin make noise. A LOT of noise. Enough noise that it's actively being called "pay-to-lose" by some Overwatch players.
The noise of the hissing snakes actually makes it damn near impossible to hear opponents' footsteps as they close in on you, and on the other side of the coin all that hissing makes hiding just not an option for Widowmaker mains.
Check out the tweet below from Brian St. Pierre for a fantastic example.
While there's no word from Blizzard yet on a fix, we have to imagine it's coming soon if they ever want to see this skin used again in anything besides casual play.
The new Medusa skin is so loud it actively punishes you for using it. Not only can you not hear enemy footsteps you also can't hide either. The enemy team can hear the snakes/hair on the Medusa skin & pinpoint your location from them. pic.twitter.com/S1P6CxO7Qp

Note: Activision Blizzard is still under investigation by the state of California for serious harassment charges. CEO Bobby Kotick is alleged to have known about such actions within his company – and performed some himself – and shielded the perpetrators from consequences.
