War Sandbox Game Myth Of Empires Delisted From Steam Following DMCA Takedown
Developer appears to confirm that Conqueror's Blade makers did not file the request.
Angela Game's Myth of Empires describes itself as a "multiplayer war sandbox game," combining elements of survival and massive-scale warfare. While I haven't personally played it myself, it looked intriguing from the standpoint of a Conqueror's Blade (and occasionally Mount & Blade) player, and I was looking forward to following its progress throughout early access.
I say "looked" and "was," because the game has been removed from Steam a few days ago. The reason for this was laid out in a brief post today on the Myth of Empires site:
A few days ago, Steam received allegations of suspected copyright infringement concerning Myth of Empires, and in accordance with the DMCA and to exempt itself from liability, has temporarily removed Myth of Empires from its store. Our development team solemnly declares: Angela Game fully owns all rights and property associated with Myth of Empires and will actively respond to any doubts or allegations on this point. We are in active contact with Steam and are doing our best to restore the game to their store. We apologize for the inconvenience this has caused players.
In short order, a rumor began to spread that the DMCA request was put in by Conqueror's Blade, either through its developer Booming Tech or publisher My.Games. The two companies have denied these allegations and, if this Reddit post is to be believed, it looks like someone with the Myth of Empires team has confirmed that assessment, saying that Conqueror's Blade "have nothing to do with this and I will not allow targeted pitchfork harassment towards them or their studio." CB has received a smattering of negative reviews (34 versus 11 positive) on Steam over the past few days.
We won't speculate on who could have filed the DMCA request -- there are plenty of medieval sandbox/survival/war titles out there that could have -- but here's hoping for a speedy resolution to the situation and that Myth of Empires can be made available to its players again in the near future.
