Fracture Online Housing

Housing is a hard thing to get right in MMOs. Often, it’s more of an afterthought, something the developers decide to add later on because players are asking for it or because it might be interesting. A lot of games tend to get something right, but in general, it’s usually more of a secondary thing than something truly essential to the game.

If the latest post from the Fractured Online team is anything to go by, housing will be a big part of the game. In fact, it won’t just be a case of picking up a house or moving into your guild’s house. Instead, players will be able to own plots of land outside of towns, start or join settlements, or even become a governor. Interestingly, settlements aren’t tied to guilds at all. Instead, players are granted citizenship by the governor – who is also responsible for deciding how to build, what technologies to use, and even kicking out citizens (should that be required). That said, it takes a bit more effort to become a governor than it does…say a guild leader…in most MMOs. You’ll need 19 other players willing to join you, who also agree that you should be the one in charge.

When building towns, players will have to do more than just plunk buildings down somewhere. The game is designed so that players have to put some thought into where to settle. Figuring out what to produce and how to procure the materials needed for production are a part of that. The upside is that the devs offer players a little help with “predefined town” areas. These are places that were once settlements but now are just the remains. Still, if a spot was good enough to build on before the Fracture, it might be good now.

Today’s post also covers things like the kinds of technology (crafting) towns can build around, how residential areas work, and more. From one housing geek to another, what they’ve laid out does look pretty neat so if the overall feel of the game is for you already, it’s probably worth looking into.
