Path of Exile 2 Boss Monster

Path of Exile 2 Game Director Jonathan Rogers joined content creator TalkativeTri the other day to talk about the current state and future of the upcoming free-to-play ARPG that’s currently in Early Access.

One major shift is the return to fixed release dates, which he says will help keep development on track and make content drops more predictable for players. Rogers also talked about ongoing work to improve performance; a new internal dashboard now helps the team track lag and disconnects by data center and ISP, making it easier to find and fix issues. While moving to new data centers caused some hiccups, they’re actively working through them.

On the gameplay front, he said the focus is bringing back the strong core skills for each class. The push toward hybrid builds had blurred class identity, especially for new players. Therefore, refocusing on class strengths should make gameplay feel more distinct and accessible.

Rogers acknowledged concerns about build variety too, saying while many skills are more viable than people think, plenty still don’t feel rewarding. The plan is to improve weaker skills to give players more solid options without relying on meta picks.

Itemization is also getting deeper. Path of Exile 2 will feature enhanced socket systems and more complex crafting mechanics geared toward endgame players. High-end chase socketables will offer exciting customization without overwhelming newcomers, according to him.

Rogers also noted that league mechanics could use more mid-game content to balance out the early-game hype and late-game grind. The team wants to strike a better balance between predictable systems like Breach and random ones like Ritual, to keep things fresh.

Last but not least, while the game is set to include over 100 bosses, not all of them will be ready at launch. He reassured fans that all bosses are conceptually done and will be added post-launch as visual and polish work wraps up.
