One of the more intriguing trailers from last night's Game Awards came courtesy of Inflexion Games, which showed off its upcoming title Nightingale. Yes, it's a survival game, with all the usual elements: crafting, building, fighting off monsters, etc. The setting and aesthetics, however, give it a flavor unlike just about anything else out there, however, and is unique enough for us to put it on our radar.

Nightingale is described as a "shared world survival-crafting game set in a rich gaslamp Victorian fantasy setting," complete with top hats and Lovecraftian eldridtch horrors. Players, a.k.a. "realmwalkers," find themselves stranded in the "Fae realms" and cut off from the normal world, forced to survive in varied environments and build their society from the ground up. Travel between the various realms is facilitated by portals, "where the remnants of humanity are threatened by the dark magic and nightmarish creatures of the Fae."

Nightingale can be played alone or with other players; given the focus on a "shared world," it's uncertain whether the game will make private servers available or be hosted on servers run by Inflexion, similar to a traditional MMORPG.

Inflexion is headed by former BioWare General Manager Aaryn Flynn, who recruited several other ex-BioWare devs to create the game. It's planned for release in 2022 on PC. You can learn more about the game and sign up for testing on the Nightingale website.
