We tend not to make a habit of covering every time a video game company announces some new funding or new influx of cash from one source or another. But Splitgate developer 1047 Games has made a habit of wow-ing us with some jaw-dropping numbers over the past few months, making it hard to look away. First, it got $6.5 million in May, followed by another $10 million in July -- but those both pale in comparison to the sum that was announced today.

As CEO Ian Proulx said in his expanded statement, the additional $100 million means "EVERYTHING is now on the table, and the scope of what we can achieve just got 10x bigger." That includes more frequent and bigger updates, more features, faster bug fixes, more platforms, and -- crucially -- the ability to handle more players, which has been a nightmare for Splitgate in its early days.

The "independent" part of Proulx's announcement is also significant; he re-iterated that 1047 will remain independent as it focuses on "growing to become the next big AAA studio, while staying true to our roots." Admittedly, anyone investing $100 million in a company will probably have some say in how things are done, but officially, at least, 1047 Games is still calling its own shots and can continue to use the "indie" label. That's more than we can say for Digital Extremes.
