Cryptic Studios (now owned by Perfect World) is developing a free-to-play business model for Star Trek Online.

“Cryptic is working on the free-to-play model for Star Trek Online,” said Kelvin Lau, Perfect World chief financial officer. “This is going to be launched by the end of this year” (source: Seeking Alpha). Sadly the statement contained no more information about Star Trek Online.

Star Trek Online is a sci-fi MMORPG based on the Star Trek Franchise. Taking place in the year 2409, Star Trek Online boasts great features and lets fans both new and old experience unparalleled adventures. Players have the opportunity to become high-ranking Starfleet officers and participate in missions that take them into the depths of space, across exotic planets and inside other starships. Star Trek Online offers total customization, from a player’s avatar to the ship he captains.

being a f2p game doesnt mean that the game is going bad, a f2p game has 500% more money than a p2p game, i think it is a good reason 😉

I just started to play STO again this week. I pre-ordered and played at launch. But STO kinds of upsets me, hasnt seemed to move much since release. Where are the other factions for example? Its Star Trek but only one major faction (feds) and one pvp faction (klingons). Everything new costs money, and i personaly hate item malls. Just another way for a company to milk you and justify making a bad game when they have to release paid content :/

Really interesting, i always wanted to play it, Star Trek is a great sci-fi universe and fits in with an mmo well. Its great how all these former p2p games are going Free2Play and still continue support and make a profit. Free players will benefit alot from the games time spent as Pay-2-Play. I’ll be checking it out later this year,

during this summer, lots of games went f2p or were announced as f2p. This has been an awesome season for the free-to-play so that’s why i called it The F2P summer*

I pre-ordered the collectors edition, the was too much like an ordinary mmo with Star Trek label stuck on. maybe Free to Play will give me a reason to play again…

Ordinary MMO with StarTrek stuck on? MOST MMOs do not let you have a ship to fly in and fight in THEN beam down onto planets, OR create your own race from combinations of all the other races (which there are alot of) or even have the “faction” like options of STO. Not sure how many “ordinary” MMOs you’ve played, or how long ago you played STO, but it’s not Ordinary.

who though those pajama wearing space boys were ever cool?
and probably this game has failed so bad they are now turning it f2p, not like WoW, which is still the best, no matter how much it is ruined now, and they are making it more f2p just cuz they are cool

      The obvious so…obvious…

WoW’s playerbase is dying. They are not making it “more f2p just cuz they are cool” but because their playerbase is dying. This is a fact. They wanted to attract more players by removing trial mode and giving you to play for free up to 20th level. You really don’t have to be Sherlock to know what’s going on. When they hit critical point, they’ll turn WoW into f2p game, that’s gonna happen sooner or later, fanboy.

Sweet, played the trial of STO, after I heard PW bought Cryptic, I’ve been waiting for this one to go F2P.
