Square Enix Announces Closure Of Long-Running, But Barely-Known, MMORPG Fantasy Earth Zero
Players will still be able to spend some time on the game before the company brings the servers down.
If you’ve never heard of Square Enix’s MMO Fantasy Earth Zero, that’s okay. Most people in the West are likely unfamiliar with the title. For the most part, the game hasn’t existed outside of Japan – although, there was apparently a year about a decade ago when it was available in North America.
According to Techraptor, the game launched in Japan as a pay-to-play title in 2006 with the title Fantasy Earth: The Ring of Dominion, only to be relaunched as the free-to-play Fantasy Earth Zero. Eventually, the game hit one million players in 2011. As mentioned, the game was launched briefly in North America – in May of 2010. It was shut down almost a year later in March 2011. Now it's closing in Japan as well.
In the closure announcement, Square Enix posted a timeline for the game’s closure. While the announcement went out today, the company will still allow players to purchase the game’s premium currency “Orb” until late August. All Orb bought prior to that point can be used until the game’s closure on September 28.
