Are You A Day One Content Person?

Or do you prefer to go at a slower pace?

Tomorrow, Final Fantasy XIV drops a new patch introducing new playable content to the MMORPG that players have been waiting for. Specifically, the game’s latest field operation, titled Occult Crescent. This is long-term content that players will be working on for a while. It’s also where players will get their cool, new weapons. Of course, there are other bits of content coming as well, new Manderville quests and society quests, but the field operation is the big one.

Of course, the Occult Crescent is the big talk of the game, and players are busy prepping themselves to take part. Discord channels and Linkshells have been created. Events have been posted. And many will be rolling out tomorrow to get in on the action. But that’s not everyone, some folks will get to it when they get to it, and that’s perfectly fine. The content is meant to last a while, after all.

But this got me thinking. When the content hits tomorrow, I’ll be knocking out the other content right away and doing what I assume will be a somewhat lengthy process of unlocking the field operation. That way, I’m ready to go when my group is.

XIV Occult Crescent

In fact, when new content hits in any game I’m playing, I’m pretty much there the day of, ready to get rolling. It might take me a couple of days to work through it (Honkai: Star Rail’s last story update took me two days to complete, and one of those days I was up til 4 am knocking the story out), but I’m in there getting it done.

One of the reasons I do this is that there are about five games that I play on the regular. And of those, at least three are the kind of games that have limited story events that they’ll end up referencing in the main story content later on. It generally sucks to miss out on that kind of stuff, so I just try really hard not to. In the case of full MMORPGs like FFXIV, there’s always something else that I’m wanting to do. And, of course, I don’t want to get behind either. After all, some MMO content turns into a graveyard once most people are done with it.

I suppose it’s a bit of FOMO combined with the completionist in me. I like having those boxes ticked, and it feels nice to clear things off my list. So that means staying on top of things, even if it may not matter much in the end. (That and it makes work a bit easier.)

All that said, it may seem excessive to some folks. And, it’s interesting to ponder other people’s approach to the same content I’m doing. I realize that for a lot of people, jumping fully into new content on a Tuesday might be unreasonable. While others might simply prefer to spread the content out as much as possible. I’ll admit that there are times when I’m sad when it’s done. Again, though, with as many games as I find myself spending time in, it’s not like I end up with a content drought. But, for those dedicated to a single game, that is a worry.
