It seems the problem isn’t with Eve, but with all of CCP’s weird spin-off projects.

CCP Games Being Sold

Eve Online treads a weird line when it comes to being F2P. It’s one of those MMORPGs that is, but also isn’t, as it does have a free option, but those who really want to excel at the game are going to be paying to have access to all the things. As a result, we don’t cover it as much as we do other games.

That said, the fact that Pearl Abyss is apparently looking to sell CCP Games, and as a result, Eve Online, is notable. According to a report on Korean financial news site Money Today (shared by MassivelyOP), the Black Desert publisher is looking at offloading CCP. Pearl Abyss paid around $180M to purchase CCP back in 2018, and while they’ve held onto it for a good while, CCP reportedly “fell short of [Pearl Abyss’] initial expectations”.

That’s not to say that Eve Online isn’t making money. Financials show that the MMORPG brought in $60M in revenue. The problem, according to the report, is that CCP keeps putting money into other Eve-related projects that don’t go anywhere. As is pointed out on Massively, there’s a sizeable list of those games. The most current, ongoing projects are Eve Vanguard and Eve Frontier (Yes, the blockchain one).

It’ll be interesting to see if CCP is sold and where it will end up. The risk with these things is that the next purchaser can demand changes in all the wrong areas.
