Aion Going free-to-play in Europe
Gameforge and NCsoft announced a new and free to play business model for Aion, the online role-playing game. From February 2012 players will be able to download the full version of the game for free and play without any subscription costs. Aion will be launched in the UK, France and Germany first and will be accessible to play across Western Europe.
Aion is one of the world’s most popular and numerous awards winning MMOGs including a very loyal fan base in Europe. Aion is set in the world of Atreia, which has been continually expanded and constantly improved in cooperation with the community since 2009. Now adventurers not only have over 3,900 quests, but also countless new dungeons, new PvP arenas and lots more. Another popular feature is the Miols: intelligent pets that have been recently added to the game. They provide, amongst other things, additional backpack slots whilst independently collecting all loot found in the game. The new unique mentor system eases new players into the game, as higher level players are rewarded for helping beginners. Mentors receive medals which they can swap for equipment items, the ‘students on the other hand receive experience points as well as loot from shared adventures.
Update 2.7 added a host of new content to the atmospheric and visually stunning game. A new PvP arena challenges players seeking a fast-paced thrill in the Crucible Coliseum, and for those more PvE oriented there’s a new raid in Padmarashka’s Cave waiting to be conquered.

Imagine, you play with your friends - all being F2P players - and you cant give each other items from drops. How annoying can this be? Some friend got a cool sword for you and he cant give it to you directly, or by e-mail or even put it in the trade house.
If you consider playing AION as a single player game, than probably its ok, but for a MMO I have doubts. Restrictions take off all the MMO spirit it might have
-f2p- many restriction like world chat,farming mats(about 50 a day) and much more;
-gold - you have access to everything, you will have a bonus in pvp points farming and instances colddown will decrease a lot!!(9.9€ a 30 days)
-Veteran- every former player that played to play, will have access to everything, only difference from the gold is that you dont earn bonus points and instances colddown will increase dramatically.
Best of all is that it doesnt matter if your acount is active or not this last days :D so they will grab those former players like me, cause i will play again.
if anyone played aion before, go to your ncsoft account and you need to allow them to transfer your personal data to Gameforge.

PS: The limitations for free players in the F2P model is intense.. It may not be worth playing.
Give l2 a chance dammit!! It just went f2p. Now everyone's gonna go to Aion. In just 2 months.
And if the PK system in L2 stays the same as it is right now I might go to Aion myself as well.. but still just 2 months after L2 goes f2p? L2 has been around for 8 years. Aion like 3? wtf

When they stop generating a profit margin due to subscriptions dropping they will embrace the free to play to keep micro transaction profits.
Europe is the testing ground to see how much they can generate in the 6 months they have left before the other games come out.
