Shutdown Announced For The Cycle: Frontier, It Plainly Just Doesn't Make Enough Money
The game is “not financially viable”.
This morning, developer Yager announced that their PvPvE extraction shooter The Cycle: Frontier would be closing due to not being “financially viable”. The game, which has mixed reviews on Steam, will be shuttering on September 27. This closure is, as they state on the announcement, in spite of their “best efforts and meaningful improvements” throughout the game’s lifespan.
As with most games that are forced to close, Yager’s closure will be a process that takes place over time, beginning today. As of now, all real money purchases have been disabled. The developer will also begin issuing refunds for purchases made after 3 am Eastern time on June 14. In addition, players can take advantage of daily and weekly offers being discounted at least 95%, free access to the premium Fortuna pass, and discounted level skips. Progression is being accelerated as well, to allow players to get in as much play as possible between now and the end.
From the announcement post: "Season 2 didn’t generate enough attention to kickstart the game again, therefore we’ve critically reviewed if the current state of The Cycle: Frontier was in line with our initial vision. In a word, it wasn’t, so we needed to correct our course. That’s why we announced the end of global mandatory wipes, along with the introduction of free loadout runs, loadout presets and changes to the early game experience, all in an effort to make the game more approachable. Just to be clear, this seemed to convince many players, and we saw an increase in our success metrics with the release of Season 3. Unfortunately it was still not enough to make The Cycle: Frontier financially viable."
This is as Yager's other big project, Dreadnought, closes in on its closing date of July 11th.
Prospectors,
Today’s news we share with a heavy heart.
The Cycle: Frontier will shut down on September 27, 2023.
Making this decision was very difficult for us, but ultimately was a necessary one.
