SWTOR begins moving servers to the cloud

On August 15th, the Leviathan server will be moving to the cloud, followed later by other Star Wars: The Old Republic servers one at a time. The Public Test Server has been migrated to cloud service for over a year, and the move should improve efforts to modernize, update, and maintain the MMORPG for years to come as it shifts over to a new developer.

The benefits of moving Star Wars: The Old Republic servers to the cloud include more streamlined and efficient backend updates, resources being reallocated to enhance the game experience, leveraging updated tech and software, and the ability to reach new players...although we aren't exactly sure how the team plans to gain players in this change (maybe cross-server access??).

On August 15th all servers will be taken down momentarily, while the Leviathan server will undergo a projected 6-hour maintenance (my money is on that time going over 6 hours). After Leviathan is successfully migrated, an announcement will be made on which server will be next and when.

You can also check out what's coming in Update 7.3.1 and the new Galactic Season 5 on the official site right now.

Yeah all those benefits mentioned are secondary. The PRIMARY reason to go to cloud is so all your servers and data is virtualized making the handoff from BioWare to Broadsword Online Games.
