The Best Hero Releases In Overwatch 2 So Far
The addition of these Overwatch characters paved new pathways both in the META and in the lore.
Overwatch 2 continues to release new heroes for the roster every few seasons, as part of the live-service format in which the team shooter functions. Since launch, Overwatch 2 has released many new characters across all three of the Tank, DPS, and Support roles. Some of these characters have gone on to be some of the most popular additions of all time, and some of the most common picks across all Competitive Ranks. Without further ado, here are 6 of the best hero additions added to Overwatch 2 so far (as of Season 20).
Kiriko

Kiriko was one of the first new characters to debut in Overwatch 2, after being teased via the Kanezka map for an extended time. She has interesting connections to other characters in the Overwatch universe as someone who grew up training with the Shimada brothers, but where Kiriko truly shines is in her ability kit. Kiriko has one of the strongest Support kits across the history of the game, and has one of the most flexible and entertaining gameplay styles. Cleanse is single-handedly the strongest tool in the game; she has great mobility, the ability to deal DPS and defend herself, and even has some incredible skin concepts to show off in-game.
As if that wasn’t enough, she also has one of the most phenomenal Overwatch animated shorts in history, showcasing a both wholesome and badass short story that sees her take down several Hashimoto members while protecting a grandfather from her apartment complex and his young, deaf grandchild.
Junker Queen
Junker Queen had been a character mentioned in the lore long before her arrival in Overwatch 2. Ever since the Junkertown map appeared, she has also been included as the voice that calls out towards players at the gate heading into the second point. When she finally became available as a playable character, it brought a character to life that many had been holding out for over the OW lifespan, and even gave some more interesting lore into Junkertown through the likes of her animated short.
Junker Queen also has a very fun, brawly playstyle that has made her another great addition to the Tank roster, with very satisfying knife+axe combos and bleed attacks. Furthermore, it was also a nice addition for the Tank roster to get yet another female character, as the only other female Tanks are Zarya, D.Va, and Orisa, in comparison to the current nine male Tank characters.
Sojourn

Much like Junker Queen, Sojourn is yet another character who has been around in the lore long before she appeared in-game. Sojourn served as the commander who led players on their objectives during the PvE Archives missions that used to take place with each Anniversary event. Knowing she had close ties to characters such as Soldier: 76 and Ana as part of the original team, fans were absolutely thrilled when she arrived in Overwatch 2.
What excited fans even more was her playstyle and kit, which made her an absolute weapon in the hands of anyone who has solid aim skills. From her debut to the current state of Overwatch 2, Sojourn has traditionally always stayed near the top of the meta, despite various buffs and nerfs. This just proves the value a character such as herself can bring, leaving no doubt that she has been one of the best additions to the game so far.
Ramattra

Ramattra, otherwise known as the true ‘big bad’ of Overwatch 2, was a much-needed addition to the game as the leader of Null Sector. With Ramattra’s arrival, fans now had a face to put to the name of the organization, as well as a notable figure who is responsible for the Omnic invasion around which the Overwatch 2 story revolves. His background and history with Zenyatta is one of the most interesting stories in the Overwatch universe, simply for the ‘yin’ and ‘yang’ elements they carry. Also, he arrived at a time in which Overwatch was in need of more interesting villains on the roster, as well as Omnics – he remains one of only five Omnics in the game to date.
Again, he had just a great kit that is not only fun to play, but quite easy for players to pick up and get value from across all Competitive Ranks and skill levels. Ask any Overwatch player, and Ramattra’s ‘Suffer as I have!’ Ultimate voiceline will surely be a contender for one of the most iconic voice lines in the game. Plus, he also has some amazing skin concepts to show off during gameplay, just making him a hugely positive addition on all fronts.
Freja

Freja is one of the newer character additions, having been released during Overwatch’s 2025 run. She represents a country that has yet to have representation with a character on the roster (Denmark) and has a bounty-hunting background, making her rather intriguing as a newbie. She also has ties to Vishkar and Torbjorn, with another known name in the lore (Emre) appearing as one of her targets. This could open up much more exciting things for Overwatch in the future, including Emre’s possible appearance as a playable hero.
Essentially, Freja has a lot of flexibility for where she can go in the universe, which makes her feel fresh and exciting in terms of story. In terms of gameplay, she’s an absolute beast, too, and makes perhaps the strongest DPS release since Sojourn. Freja has an extremely satisfying playstyle both in standard OW and Stadium with her crossbow bolts, and her voice lines bring that ‘cool, confident bounty-hunter’ vibe to life perfectly. After all, she is known for only taking the ‘hard’ bounties!
Wuyang

Last but certainly not least is yet another 2025 hero release with Wuyang, the latest Support hero, and second-most recent hero to enter the game, prior to Vendetta. Wuyang is a very fun Support character who brings the best of everything you could possibly want in the role to his kit. Players have great mobility, strong healing, good DPS, and the ability to curve their shots or control the trajectory to even hit targets around corners. He also arrived with very few connections to other characters in the universe, and instead introduced a new location in the lore that we will be sure to see more of moving forward – Wuxing University. This University essentially works almost like the elemental bending of Avatar, only in a college setting.
Wuyang, despite his family’s history of being successful Fire College students (known for their combat), struggled in school and only scored high enough to be accepted into Water College, a route of study that develops healers and medics instead. However, Wuyang chooses to forge his own path and learns how to bring both his medical knowledge and his combat skills to the battlefield to fight danger alongside his peers. Wuyang certainly took things in an interesting direction with his background, as it has been made clear that these elemental abilities are not considered ‘magic’. It would also be great to learn more about this in the future of Overwatch. One way to do so would possibly be with the potential release of his sister Anran (a Fire College student) as a playable character, bringing some Zuko and Azula vibes to the game...just more wholesome!
