Mike "Magicman" Byrne has been a part of the MMOBomb family for years and serves as the site's current Editor-in-Chief. His love for MMOs and gaming in general has led him to covering games for numerous websites including Gamebreaker TV and XIV Nation where he proudly displays his fanboy flag for FFXIV:ARR.

  1. You know what, if this does go buy to play, I think I’ll just buy it anyways, from what i’ve seen of the game, it looks so sweet!

  2. Ok, you guys probably knew this rant was coming from me… so here it is…

MMORPFGs require no skill, huh? So I guess eye-hand coordination, enhanced reaction time, general awareness of your surroundings, memorization, basic deduction, specific knowledge, and short-term planning aren’t skills then?

You know what, Ms. Elitist? Go play TSW and fight the last boss of Polaris, or fight any of the bosses in the new IA in RIFT… better yet… we don’t even have to go there… competently play Defiler or Chloromancer in RIFT, or a leech healer in TSW. Master those things -then- you can tell me it requires “no skill”. Gonna just roll this into a DA Bomb…

Da Bomb for MMOs that -do- require skill through complex classes and encounters.

    • Well, everything requires skill. Including things like walking and eating. Yes MMORPGs do require some sort of skill, but you can’t honestly believe that they are on the same level with shooters (you can watch a TV show while playing most MMORPGs -_-). And I say this as someone who regularly plays both genres on moderately high level.

Also Magicman is indeed kinda bad at shooters and he knows it. I mean it’s nothing to be ashamed of, but it can be painful to watch him play shooters (not just FPS games, but also slow TPS games like Dreadnought). This doesn’t make his shooter-related first looks any less valuable, just makes me cringe from time to time while I watch them.

However, in case of “Energy Heroes” such a comment was totally uncalled for. Not even because the game is bad, but because he didn’t get past tutorial because of low player population. In other words, he didn’t get to show parts of the game where “shooter skills” would have made any difference.

      • I play both as well, and you’re right -some- MMORPGs require less skill than others, and less skill than shooters. But, they also don’t exactly use the same skillsets. Certain things in shooters requires more coordination and awareness for example, but the team play aspect isn’t often there. As previously stated until you can do the aforementioned things with proficiency. I don’t think anyone has a place to judge what skills it does and does not take. And as an aside, games are supposed to be fun. That’s the main point. I’m not saying to coddle the utterly inept or those without a sliver of common sense, but to bash someone’s skills for no reason is uncalled for.
