7 MMORPGs With Memorable Music
Here's the best music in the genre.
I know some of you out there turn the music off when playing an MMORPG, but if you do so in these games you're missing something special. The following MMOs are a treat for the senses, especially your earholes. If you've got that music volume turned down in these games, do yourself a favor and crank it up some time. You'll be pleasantly surprised.
Final Fantasy XIV
Usually, when researching one of these topics there's some debate among fans of which game has the best this or that. But when it comes to the soundtrack, there was a clear winner out there. Final Fantasy XIV consistently takes the top spot in every discussion I can find about MMO music, and there's good reason for it. The music is beautiful, it accompanies what's happening on the screen well, and it has become iconic in the video game genre. Don't sleep on Final Fantasy XI's soundtrack either, it is quite often brought up in this discussion as well.
Lord of the Rings Online
A lot of things surprised me about The Lord of the Rings Online when I started getting heavily into it last year, including the music. It does a great job of setting the stage for the world around you, portraying large open grass fields or deep dark caverns. The character select screen music is an earworm that'll have you humming along as you peruse your toons. It's a real testament to how much love and attention went into creating the world of LOTRO.
The Elder Scrolls Online
Whether it's the iconic Elder Scrolls theme or the plethora of original songs for The Elder Scrolls Online, the music in ESO does a fantastic job of helping the visuals in world-building and immersing you into that world. The ESO soundtrack does a fantastic job of making you feel like you are in the world of The Elder Scrolls, helping make that jump from single-player games to MMORPG a little easier.
Star Wars: The Old Republic
Sure, you've got the Star Wars main theme to fall back on here, but Star Wars: The Old Republic has plenty of other music that fits so well within the Star Wars universe that if you heard them without context and I told you they were from one of the movies, you'd believe it.
World of Warcraft
For many of us, there are few musical tracks as nostalgic as those of World of Warcraft. It's the Horde vs. the Alliance, and it was the king of MMOs back in its heyday. Blizzard may be known for their outstanding cinematics, but don't sleep on their soundtracks. Some of them are the theme of many hours of our lives.
Guild Wars 2
I'm going to list Guild Wars 2 here, and rightfully so, but Guild Wars 1 was brought up just as often in all of the conversations I saw about best MMO soundtracks. Both games have fantastic OSTs that set the stage for the adventures you go on. ArenaNet has proven over time that they pay attention to the small details, and the music of both their games shows that investment pays off.
Secret World Legends
This one might surprise you, but Secret World Legends, formerly known as The Secret World, has a soundtrack that really helps create the dark, mysterious ambiance of the game. The settings and the sound come together to create one of the great game worlds of the MMORPG genre. If only the combat could've kept up with everything else the game has going for it.
That's our list. What's your favorite MMORPG soundtrack? Let us know in the comments.
