15 Of The Coolest Mounts In FFXIV And How To Get Them
Final Fantasy XIV has a mount for almost every occasion.
Because MMORPGs are built to be lived in, players need a good bit to do. Sooner or later, the story content stops for a bit. So, there have to be other things to keep players logging in. And, no, not everyone is up for the raid grind. Over time, developers have come up with plenty of ways for us to spend our time in-game, including things like PvP, crafting and gathering, and even building houses. One thing that’s very common in MMO development is giving players things to collect.
Having been around for over a decade, Final Fantasy XIV has a massive list of things to collect. Among these is an impressive list of mounts. The game offers mounts for everything from completing quests in the main storyline to drops for savage raid completion, deep dungeons, and more. Some are more difficult to obtain, requiring a lot of work. Others just require you to be there. Of course, some are available via the store. Many of those last ones are former event rewards.
There’s even one – the Unicorn – that simply requires you to realize there’s a side quest available to the Conjurer class in the guild at level 30 in order to obtain it. According to the XIV Collect collection tracker, only around 43% of players have grabbed this one.
Of course, everyone has their favorite mounts, and some are definitely pretty cool. So, we’ve decided to share a list of what we believe to be some of the coolest mounts available in the game. We did set some criteria, however. As mentioned above, the game has a decent amount of pretty neat mounts available in the store, and some of these are from former events. For this list, we’ve decided to ignore those. So, you won’t find any store or event mounts on it – no matter how cool we think Good Boi Torgal is. Instead, we’ll be concentrating on mounts you can get just by playing the game. Some will take more work than others, but that’s the way of things. Note, that despite the mount being pretty damned cool, we’re also skipping over Twintania this time due to acquisition requiring players to recruit a number of friends into the game.
Magitek Armor
Okay, I’ll be honest with you. This one is on here for purely sentimental reasons. The Magitek Armor is a Reaper-style armor that folks who have been playing the Final Fantasy franchise for a while will immediately recognize. The armor first appeared in Final Fantasy VI (US numbering), and we’ve loved it ever since.
This mount is one of those that takes very little effort. In fact, it’s put right in front of you. All you really have to do is complete the A Realm Reborn main storyline and she’s yours. She even comes with cool little buttons for weapons. Unfortunately, they’re really just for show. So, no, you can’t take her into combat.
Rathalos
This mount is an interesting one because it’s from a collaboration with Monster Hunter. However, unlike a lot of collaborations in Final Fantasy XIV, this one is a permanent fixture. That’s not to say the others are gone forever. Rather they simply come and go as the devs feel like bringing them back for events.
Rathalos, however, is a reward for The Great Hunt (Extreme) fight. This is one of many trials that exist in the game. It’s not the only crossover event that’s simply remained, as there’s also a whole tier of Nier alliance raids. However, it is a bit easier to get a group together.
To obtain the mount, you’ll really want to hope for a drop, which isn’t guaranteed. What is guaranteed is that for every fight you’ll be able to claim one of Rathalos’ scales. Claim enough and you can just go pick up the mount from the related NPC.
Moon Hopper
The Moon Hopper – or as I like to call it, “Disco Bunny” – is a floating robotic rabbit players can buy from one of the game’s Societies. It requires players to have their crafting leveled to 80 and have made it to the Endwalker part of the storyline. With that achieved, it’s just a matter of helping out the Loporrits. As you help them achieve their goals by doing related crafting quests, you’ll earn a special currency that can be used to buy things as they unlock. One of these items is The Moon Hopper.
If you’re wondering why I’ve dubbed it “Disco Bunny”, it comes with a little song and dance ability.
Magicked Bed
Imagine flying into battle and taking a nap at the same time. Yeah, that’s what the Magicked Bed is, a mount that players can fly around on while lying down. Technically, there are now two different versions of this mount. The original Magicked bed can be crafted by those with the Carpenter job.
The second, the Magicked Children’s Bed is far more difficult to obtain, requiring players to get a Gold Certificate of Gold Commendation out of Khloe’s Wonderous Tales turn-ins or to collect 600 Faux Leaves. Both of these require players to have gotten far enough into the Heavensward storyline to unlock Idyllshire and the related NPCs.
Demi-Ozma
A big shiny orb, sometimes cube, Demi-Ozma is one of the lesser-owned mounts in the game. That’s because it’s locked behind a rather difficult dungeon designed for up to 56 players at once. Add to that the fact that the dungeon is locked behind the last zone of the field operation, Eureka, and you’re talking about something that requires a lot of patience to get. That said, if you spend the time to make it through the Eureka storyline and complete the dungeon, you’ll earn a mount that, according to FFXIV Collect, only about 16% of the game’s players have.
Ehll Tou
This one is one of my personal favorites – an adorable red dragon wearing a jaunty hat and carrying a crafting hammer and bag. As you might guess from her attire, Ehll Tou is tied to crafting. Specifically, she’s the only mount drop available from a Delivery Quest. If you’re unfamiliar with these the game introduces NPCs between expansions that crafters and gatherers can help out by delivering items to. The items are dictated by the NPC’s storyline, and in exchange, they offer decent experience and much-needed currency. At the end, players get a reward that typically involves being able to play dress-up with the NPC. But, in Ehll Tou’s case, you get a mount.
Landerwaffe
The Landerwaffe is another of those mounts that’s going to take a lot of work. Every expansion in Final Fantasy XIV introduces a series of trials to the game. Once a trial is completed, players will (eventually) be offered the opportunity to attempt an “Extreme” version of the trial. Completing a trial offers a chest, and those chests may or may not have a mount inside. Each expansion’s trials run on a theme. For instance, in Shadowbringers, every trial offers a variation of a “Gwibber” – a specific type of dragon in the game. When players complete all the extremes and obtain all the mounts from an expansion, they’ll be offered a quest that will reward them with a new mount. In the case of the Gwibbers, this would be the Laderwaffe, a big robotic dragon.
Spectral Statice
Following Endwalker, Square Enix introduced a new type of dungeon to FFXIV, the Variant Dungeon. These dungeons can be done solo or with up to four people. Unlike a normal dungeon, players have to make choices about where to go. The choices will give players slightly different outcomes, twelve in total. Those who unlock all twelve will receive a mount.
The Spectral Statice is the reward for completing the Aloalo Island Variant dungeon. The good news is that while it will require at least twelve runs to get the mount, the dungeon also drops other random rewards and consistently drops a currency that can be used to buy special items. So, the runs are worth doing on their own.
Pinky
Do you like treasure hunting? Because that’s where you’ll find this big, elaborate pink elephant. Or, rather, that’s where you’ll find the items needed to obtain it. It will, however, take time and patience as Final Fantasy XIV’s treasure hunting isn’t big on just handing players the things they want.
The process is simple enough. First, obtain the level 90 Timeworn Ophiotauroskin Map. Next, get together a group of friends. Then, use the map to find treasure. If you’re lucky, once you kill all the mobs that appear when you try to open the treasure chest, a portal to an instance will open. If you’re even luckier a Bottle of Exciting Tonic will appear as a reward. You’ll have to roll on it, so there’s the risk of one of your friends ending up with the Tonic instead.
If you do win the roll, you’re still not done. You’ll need to go through the whole process again two more times. Once you have all three bottles, go visit Nesvaaz in Radz-at-Han to claim your very own Pinky.
UFO
Here’s another relatively easy one for you, provided you’re willing to do side-story content. Specifically, you’ll need to do the Manderville quests – all of them. Or, at least all of them through Endwalker. As a general rule, the Manderville adventures aren’t required – which is probably why FFXIV Collect estimates about 17% of players have the UFO mount. That said, anyone wanting the Manderville relic weapons has to do the Manderville story quests. So, while you’re there, you might as well complete it and get your mount.
Morbol
And, we’re back to the ones that require patience again. In this case, players need to take on the Blue Mage limited job. They’ll then need to complete a series of achievements that consist of completing specific raids with a party made up solely of Blue Mages. Completing all those achievements will earn the player the “True Blue” achievement and the Morbol mount.
Amaro
The Amaro is a cool mount for story reasons – reasons we won’t go into here, just in case any of you are still working your way to Shadowbringers. Still, we love him. That’s not to say we exactly love the grind required to obtain him. In order to receive this mount, players need to get all their combat jobs to level 80. Well, okay, not all of them. Not all the jobs currently available existed in Shadowbringers. But you will need to complete the Mastering War IV and Mastering Magic IV achievements in order to receive him. Again, this one requires patience.
Wings of Ruin
Remember that talk of Extremes earlier? Well, the Wings of Ruin are the potential reward for completing the first extreme available in Dawntrail, Waorqor Lar Dor. Quite a few players had been clamoring for wings as a mount for a while now – especially with wings being used as a mode of transport in the Endwalker treasure dungeons. Well, now we finally have them.
Miw Miisv
It’s small, it’s cute. It’s an electric jellyfish that absorbs you. Really, that’s what it is. The Miw Miisv is another Society Quest reward. This one is also from Endwalker, specifically the Omicron Society quests. It’s the same deal as the Moon Hopper except this time you’re gathering instead of crafting.
Forgiven Reticence
The Forgiven Reticence is one of my all-time favorite mounts. It’s a big, stone-looking lion with wings, and you look pretty cool crouched on his back. To obtain this mount, you’ll need to do some hunting – not treasure hunting, but the go out and kill things kind. How you go about it is up to you. Daily hunt bills as well as big group hunts reward the currency needed to purchase this mount. You’ll just need to do enough of either to collect 3,200 Sacks of Nuts. Once you have them, head to the Crystarium or Eulmore and buy the mount from the hunt vendor. Note that this remains the hunt currency for the next two expansions, and there are three other mounts, plus minions and gear that can be obtained with it.
