2023 Is The Year Eve Online FINALLY Gets Excel Integration As The Year's Roadmap Is Revealed
This is it. Come May, “Spreadsheets in Space” is no longer a joke.
Of all the crossovers we’ve seen in MMOs lately, it took CCP Games to announce the one that makes the most sense. Of course, they announced it a bit back, but now we finally know when the Eve Online X Excel Spreadsheets crossover will be happening.
All joking aside, today the developer dropped the 2023 roadmap for Eve Online. This year marks 20 years of players doing their best to destroy each other in space while making use of complex systems that earned the game its alternate title of “Spreadsheets in Space” – a title used by many in a “this game is boring” way, but embraced by those who love the game. It makes sense that one of the things on the game’s 2023 roadmap would include the implementation of Microsoft Excel.
Of course, while that’s probably my favorite thing being done to the game this year, that’s not all the developers have planned. A rather lengthy Producer’s Letter published today offers players a look at what’s to come throughout 2023. This includes plans to add even more players to the game – something they’ve been working on already – adding better ways to introduce new players to the game and get them up and running and ready to compete with the already existing player base. This year, they’ll continue to work on that, offering them ways to make more of a personal impact in the game.
As the dev team moves forward, they’re taking what they’ve learned from recent changes and finding ways to apply them elsewhere. One such thing noted is taking what was learned from Factional Warfare and using that to help introduce players to more of the game’s sandbox, while helping lower the hump of the game’s learning curve a bit. With a good portion of the game’s player base having been there for a decade or more, the whole idea of getting caught up with those players while joining and having to do it the hard way is a bit of a deterrent. This is definitely a good move.
As this is a new year, CCP is also kicking off some celebratory activities in the game. EVE’s Lunar New Year begins on January 19. At the same time, they’ll be introducing Simplified Chinese to the Tranquility server. Near the end of January, that Microsoft Excel plug-in will soft launch in the game – available to Omega players. The full launch will occur right around the game’s 20th-anniversary celebration in May.
