Overwatch League 2023 End

Yesterday marked the end of the 2023 Overwatch League, with Florida Mayhem taking the title (and $1 million) for the first time. The thing is, it may also be the last time. The future of the League is currently in question as the team owners prepare to finally vote on the operating agreement announced back in July. If the owners vote against the agreement, it could mean the end of the shooter's League.

If you were watching the championship and the final bit of coverage with host Soe Gschwind seemed a bit bittersweet, this is why. The host ended the night with a message to the community looking back over the last six years. The messages also thanked the fans for their support, saying, “You made this so much more than just a gaming community; this was family.”

Yesterday’s stream was followed up today with a message on the Overwatch League Twitter account stating that the organization is currently focused on “building [their] vision of a revitalized esports program”. They also stated that they’ll share details once they’re finalized.

If the team owners vote to not continue under the new agreement, then Blizzard will be forced to pay $6 million to each team. That’s a total of $144 million in fees.
