GDC 2024: Epic Games Store Is Coming To Android And iOS Later This Year
It is finally happening.
Epic Games has been in quite the fight over the past few years, especially when it comes to Apple and iOS devices. While Epic says there are still more battles to be fought, they've come far enough that the Epic Games Store will be launching on iOS and Android by the end of this year.
The announcement was made during the State of Unreal Livestream earlier today from GDC. This, of course, means that Fortnite, Epic's gaming cash cow, will be returning to mobile as well. All of this is due to Apple easing up on its App Store guidelines making it possible to "provide access to mini apps and games" inside of other apps.
Don't think that Apple is doing this out of the kindness of their hearts. Government bodies have stepped in to force Apple to allow things like this to occur, most notably in the EU. This also opens the door for other developers such as Microsoft to release an iOS Xbox Game Pass app that supports Xbox Cloud Gaming as well.
Apple had resisted all of this due to apps such as these bypassing Apple's cut of the profits, but now the boom period of self-contained apps with their own cash shops seems to be on the horizon.
You can watch the entire State of Unreal Livestream from the GDC 2024. The part about the Epic Games Store coming to iOS and Android begins around the 1:00:24 mark.
