20 years ago today, on Jan. 4, 2001, Jagex thrust RuneScape out into the world. Two decades and hundreds of millions of players later, it's still going strong, and Jagex is throwing a yearlong party to celebrate.

It starts today with The Grand Party anniversary event, which will see players taking part in fights against "demons and dragons of yore," while also interacting with such nostalgic characters as the Wise Old Man and the Sandwich Lady. Players can collect the 20th Anniversary Cape and Outfit to show their long-time loyalty. It's all part of a "month-long extravaganza" with weekly quest, where players can visit the crater for cake, XP lamps, and more.

In Old School RuneScape, the Green Gnome Child event kicks off this Wednesday, the 6th, leading players on quests through the "original haunts of RuneScape" to collect the Anniversary Cloak, as well as a Gnome Child dedication for their home chapels.

On Jan. 25, the first part of the four-part Once Upon a Time quest series will hit servers. Titled "Foreshadowing," it will set up events for future developments, which will take place over the course of the year, as will the Elder Gods story arc.

If you're interested in physical goodies, Jagex will be teaming with Dark Horse Comics to produce RuneScape: The First 20 Years -– An Illustrated History. It's a full-color hardcover companion book, chock full of artwork and illustrations that arrives in the second half of the year. Also on the schedule is a collaboration with Laced Records to produce a limited-edition, gold vinyl pressing of RuneScape: Original Soundtrack Classics, which will include 24 midi tracks of the game's iconic music. Pre-orders are available now, with an expected ship date of April 30.

RuneScape itself also visits new places in 2021, with the full launch of the game on mobile devices coming soon and Old School RuneScape set to join its cousin on Steam in the spring.
