They're also improving onboarding, quests, and accessibility.
Jagex is moving forward with its plan to overhaul RuneScape’s monetization strategy following a summer of “MTX experiments” designed to reduce what they admitted was an overbearing microtransaction problem. These limited-time tests explored what RuneScape would look like without lockboxes and certain cosmetics while allowing players of the free-to-play MMORPG to purchase older items directly.
With the experiments now complete, Jagex has promised a detailed update on October 27 — outlining a “sustainable, Membership growth-led trajectory” for the MMORPG’s future. They also hinted that this new direction goes beyond just scaling back microtransactions, suggesting upcoming improvements to RuneScape’s user interface, visual identity, onboarding experience, and overall game health.
On that note too, Old School RuneScape helping new players get started easier than before with a series of adjustments to Tutorial Island, Lumbridge, and early-game quests. Jagex is improving onboarding and introducing new questlines that naturally guide players through the different types of content the game offers. These changes will roll out gradually through the rest of this year and into 2026.
Last but not least, Old School RuneScape has launched its annual player survey for 2025 — encouraging players to share feedback about recent updates, with a giveaway of 50 $50 gift cards as an incentive for participation.
