Maxis Is Seeking A Game Dev Familiar With "Developing Multiplayer Video Games" For The Sims
Could this be foreshadowing for the future of the series?
(UPDATE 9/11/2022: Thanks to our friend Bree over at Massively, we've seen that the job posting has been updated and the "multiplayer" elements have been removed from the posting. Whether the original posting was a mistake or not though we don't yet know but we have reached out to Maxis/EA for comment.)
The Sims, a series of real-life simulation titles by developer Maxis and publisher Electronic Arts, is seeking a Senior Game Designer with a background in "developing multiplayer video games." While nothing is confirmed, the position could contribute to the series' graphics engine modernization plans after hiring a rendering engineer and potential evolution into a more functional multiplayer game rather than its limited scope in former games.
The role calls for the developer to be an "advocate for the social and multiplayer aspects of all experiences." They also must have plenty of work chops in designing on PC, consoles, mobile, and contributing to live-service games. With a designer having that vast of a portfolio, it wouldn't be weird to think Maxis is prepping for a new mainline title with a bigger multiplayer focus.
The live-service aspect of the dev's credentials also leans into a current or upcoming Sims title having a multiplayer extension to its usual gameplay loop. In my opinion, it seems more believable for this to be the case, but we'll have to wait to hear more from Maxis and their plans for The Sims.
