Things might get very serious soon in Team Fortress 2 — okay, about as serious as TF2 can get anyway. A recent announcement from developer Valve revealed that the company is now adding competitive mode features standard to a lot of games these days, to the free-to-play team shooter.

The new update, titled “Meet Your Match,” introduces three new features designed to bring more competitive play to the game.

The first addition is matchmaking. Players’ teams will be matched against players of a similar skill level, giving them time to learn the ropes and improve.

Next is the competitive mode itself. This is a ranked 6v6 game featuring all nine of the game’s existing classes. As players rank up they will earn up to 18 different titles and badges. They will also be able to track their progress in game.

Finally, there is the casual mode. With this, quickplay is being modified to match players into 12v12 games with players of equal skill. Matches will be played from beginning to end and there will be a winning and a losing team.

Full details on the new update and the competitive mode additions can be found on the TF2 site.

  1. Yeah, i suppsoe overwatch was a decent wake-the-fk-up call for valve who were sitting on their lazy arses, thanks to the success of steam and tf2, for too fkin’ long.

  2. Valve still got it overwach is taking a good chunk of player but the 60 bucks pay wall is pretty much stoping them from complete take over if it was 15-30 sure but 60 just no its not a triple A game with amazing story and lots to do just a competitive shooter way overpriced.

      • TF2 isn’t lobby-based. It has always used dedicated servers, both official and community hosted. The only reason games like Overwatch don’t use a server browser is because Blizzard believes (perhaps rightly so) that their players are too stupid to be allowed to play how they want.

The competitive community flourished just fine on community servers in games like TF2, Quake, Counter-Strike, and Unreal Tournament. Long before trash like Call of Duty popularized long match queues and the removal of the ability to pick what map you play on. Were you born yesterday or what?

        • Razer very right about this problem. it start more appearing in almost every genre that use the Auto matchmaking system nowadays.

        • sc:go allowed u to choose wich map u wanna play on but now 90% of the servers is de_dust 2
cause of game with no matchmaking there were maps that i missed without me realizing AND creating a server is a pain in the ass by itself

  3. It looks like Overwatch is taking away TF2 players , that’s why they are implementing ranked after so many years .. Competition is good 😛

    • ikr, valve thought they had this, but hey we are talking about Blizzard not some cheap independent company haha, besides tf2 is filled with 12 years old kids that puts rhianna on their mics
