There Are Rumors Sony Might Cancel The PlayStation Showcase Because It Could Make Microsoft's Acquisition Case Stronger
Apparently they’re afraid the Showcase might make a case for Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard.
If you’ve been following the whole Microsoft wanting to buy Activision Blizzard thing, then you already know that one company is very opposed to the whole thing. In fact, as various regulatory agencies debate whether or not to approve the purchase, a thing that is necessary when there is a concern about a monopoly, PlayStation manufacturer Sony has been very vocal in trying to prevent it, asserting that such a move could have a negative impact on them by giving a rival console developer control over certain IPs, like Call of Duty.
Effectively, Sony has been worried that if the deal were passed it would result in Microsoft making games that have a history of being on the PlayStation platform Xbox exclusives. There’s been quite a bit of quibbling over this.
Now, according to Mille A on Twitter (who has a track record with these sorts of things), insiders are saying that Sony may actually cancel the PlayStation Showcase due to this deal still being a possibility. It seems that the company had intended to announce the date of the showcase on October 11. That date has already come and gone. The event itself was reported to be planned for October 20 – not here yet, but far too close to announce something now. Supposedly, several big titles would have been revealed at this event, including the Horizon Zero Dawn Remake, a Silent Hill reveal, and possibly the Final Fantasy XVI trailer.
The problem, apparently, is that if Sony dropped these reveals and trailers – and if they were well received – it would lend credence to the idea that Sony doesn’t need to worry about the acquisition as they have a very strong portfolio already. It makes a bit of sense but also feels a bit stupid. Sooner or later, that list of games will have to come out – unless they intend to just not release the games until the acquisition is decided once and for all. And, of course, the cancellation will annoy players who really want a look at what’s coming.
