Two guys doing a video in a bedroom and talking about Team Fortress 2 isn't usually newsworthy. But when the two guys have just come back from a trip to Valve with news about something new coming to Team Fortress 2, well, then we'll pay attention.

The guys in question are eXtine and Mana of eXtv, and on their recent journey to the Promised Land, they received a lot of info about Valve's plans to facilitate competitive matchmaking in Team Fortress 2, which is a "high priority" for the dev team. Obviously, things are still in development, but among the details the pair mentions are on the table are:

  • 6v6 or 9v9 matches, potentially using "Highlander" (no more than one of each class) rules
  • Possible item restrictions, to give Valve feedback on what works and what doesn't
  • A bigger focus on the competitive TF2 community and an attempt to integrate it into the main TF2 player base
  • And some brief talk about a VR demo... wut?
  • They go on to say that the matchmaking system is "essentially playable" in-house at Valve, but there's no timeline for when it will be released to the general public.
