Destiny 2 End

After twelve years, production work on Bungie’s free-to-play team shooter, Destiny 2, is coming to an end. That’s not to say the game is going away completely. Rather, after June 9, it will be on a sort of life support. But it seems it will be a fairly improved life support.

The news dropped in a post on Bungie’s site, where it’s stated that the developer is shifting focus and beginning work on its next games. The result is that active development is coming to an end. But before that happens, they’ll be dropping the game’s last big patch. And it does seem to be pretty full. In fact, it contains content and changes players have asked for, but that might have otherwise come at a later point had live development continued.

The post details these things, beginning with a new version of the Moment of Triumph, which will celebrate player achievements throughout the game’s lifespan rather than just the game’s most recent chapter. There will even be a special title and armor ornament set available to those who have achieved a lot during their time in the game.

The update will also bring back the Director and introduce a new Pantheon, with bits of it unlocking through June 16. Raid and dungeon loot are being updated, as are destination weapons and armor. Some of the classes will be tweaked as well.

As sunsetting a game goes, this doesn’t seem like the worst outcome. Even the final rewards pass tied to the Monument of Triumph has an increased number of items for players to obtain, and players will now be able to transmog their Exotic armors and show them off in PvP. So it seems like players will have plenty to keep them entertained for a while, even without new updates.

That said, seasonal events will be going away (for obvious reasons). But don’t worry if you missed out on some of the event rewards; they’ll be available in other ways.
