Got Enough Battle Royales Yet? If Not, Here's Tetris 99!
Years from now, we'll talk in reverential tones about early 2019 and how it reshaped the battle royale genre forever. One title in particular will come to mind: a game that came out of nowhere, captivating players and proving that you can take an old formula and merge it with modern sensibilities to create a breakout hit.
Apex Legends? No, silly. We're talking about Tetris 99, a new free-to-play title for the Nintendo Switch (provided you have a Switch Online membership). Yee-haw!
If the notion of a Tetris battle royale doesn't get your blood pumping, check out the description on the game's home page:
In large-scale, 99-player battles, it'll take speed, skill, and strategy to knock out the competition and become the last player standing. You can target opponents by sending them Garbage Blocks, but be careful…your rivals can target you back! Defeat opponents to acquire KO badges that may give you the advantage on future attacks. Survive the onslaught and look forward to upcoming online events!
Amazing as that sounds, I think Nintendo should make a real Tetris battle royale game, in a PUBG or Fortnite style, where the only weapons you can find are various blocks that fall from the sky. They could model them after real weapons easily enough:
I-block: Club
L-block: Rifle
T-block: Shield
Square: Grenade
The Z-block, however, would still be worthless. As it should be.
