Things Are Getting Prettier In Roblox By Introducing New Custom Material Variants And New Enhancements To Materials
All changes have been made in order to create a more immersive and dynamic experience.
Roblox has recently rolled out a number of advancements to their material system that has enhanced the visual quality of many common materials like glass, brick, metal, and more, in order to create a more realistic environment. Still, not everyone likes change and thankfully those that refuse to modernize up can still enjoy the classic materials. To make things even easier, creators will now have access to a new and user-friendly Material Manager tool in Roblox Studio allowing them to make custom variations of Roblox’s base materials to better suit their aesthetic vision.
One interesting thing to point out is that the materials on Roblox are created to resemble the real world. That means that in addition to surface appearance, their physical properties should also influence how objects behave. The example Roblox gave was if you’re driving a car, the rubber material of the tires should behave as you would expect depending on the surface they’re on–that means skidding on wet asphalt or even getting stuck in the mud. This level of detail is paramount in making Roblox feel like living, breathing worlds.
Roblox’s physically-based rendering, or PBR, has also been constructed to best allow creators access to high-quality materials that look and feel as realistic as possible. By fully utilizing PBR, Roblox can better simulate real world shading, reflections, and shadows.
The creative possibilities don’t stop there, though. Roblox Studio has also given creators the ability to replace in-game material with their own custom designs in order to create unique visual styles. The changes being made to the material system should create better immersion for their creators, all the while giving creators an ever-expanding palette to work with as they bring their imaginations to life.
