Roblox Age Rating

As someone who doesn’t play Roblox and who doesn’t have kids who play Roblox, I’ve never looked too deeply at how they rate their content. So, I didn’t realize that the company hasn’t exactly been using the standard rating systems we’re all used to, such as ESRP or PEGI. If you’d asked me before today, I would have thought they did.

The thing is, that Roblox isn’t a single MMO, but rather a free-to-play platform people of all types build their games on. So, it makes a bit of sense that the company wouldn’t want to go too deeply into that kind of ranking, just based on the effort required. But, considering the problems Roblox has been having regarding children’s safety, it seems like the effort should have been made.

So, it’s a bit surprising that they’re just doing it now. Today, news broke that Roblox is working with the International Age Rating Coalition (IARC) to have the experiences available in Roblox labeled appropriately in each region. This means the ESRB ratings for the US, PEGI for Europe and the UK, GRAC in the Republic of Korea, and USK in Germany.

The company is working with the organization on creating a “globally streamlined process” that Roblox creators can use to obtain ratings. This follows the company's introduction of a “Sensitive Issues” content tag that makes content inaccessible to players under 13.

As noted on Games Industry.biz, Roblox is also implementing more ways to verify ages on the platform, such as face scanning and ID age verification.
