Roblox Cracks Down On Sexual And Adult Content After Safety Lawsuits

Roblox is tightening its rules around adult and sexual content in response to lawsuits and growing concerns about child safety on the platform.

In a policy update announced by chief safety officer Matt Kaufman, the company behind the free-to-play online simulation gaming platform clarified that not only explicit sexual content but also “content, settings, or behavior that implies sexual activity” is now banned. This change comes amid legal challenges, including a lawsuit from Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill, who claims Roblox has created an environment that enables child predators and facilitates the exploitation of minors. Roblox denied these accusations, stating it does not intentionally endanger its users, and pointed to recent safety improvements.

Among those improvements are stricter parental controls, age verification tools like an AI-powered age estimator, and limitations preventing users under 13 from accessing social hangout spaces. The platform has also introduced “Trusted Connections” to make chatting safer and allow parents to manage accounts more effectively.

Looking forward, Roblox plans to restrict all unrated experiences to developers and collaborators only, requiring creators to apply for a maturity label before publishing them. Social spaces set in private rooms, bars, or clubs will soon be locked to players 17 and older who verify their identity. Developers building such content will also need to confirm they meet the age requirement.

Additionally, Roblox is deploying automated tools to detect and shut down servers where rule-breaking behavior occurs, even in otherwise compliant experiences.
