Square Enix Financials Reveal Backtrack On Studio Sales Going To NFT Integration And, Yeah, FFXIV Did Pretty Well

To no one's surprise the MMORPG keeps on rolling...in the cash, that is.

Square Enix's financial year closed on March 31st, 2022 and we received the actual consolidated financials sheet a while ago, but now we have the english translation of the financial presentation given back in May.

Guess what?

FFXIV did really well.

While Square Enix as a whole experienced a ¥32.7 billion increase in net sales year over year, the HD Games department continued to take a bit of a hit compared to those lofty expectations usually set by Square Enix.

Offsetting this hit though is the "MMORPG in shining armor" as the launch of Endwalker not only saw record sales, but the subsequent months after release have continued to see growth in the revenue generated by Yoshi-P and team. In the MMO category, even Dragon Quest X got a nod in the presentation as the launch of that game's recent expansion also contributed to the MMO sector's growth.

In surprising news though, Square Enix President Yosuke Matsuda said that cash coming in from the recent sale of western studios wouldn't actually go towards funding Square Enix's NFT/Blockchain exploration as the company previously stated.

Instead, Matsuda said those funds would be used "primarily to fund our efforts to foster solid IP and to enhance our development capabilities in our core Digital Entertainment segment." This doesn't mean that Square Enix is backtracking fully on the whole concept, but they have decided to seek funding through other sources for those future ventures.

You can take a look at the entire report (including the still growing gap between digital and physical sales) in the full presentation.
