The Lord of the Rings Online Developers Share Future Of Housing In Q&A
Rivendell homesteads, new currencies, expanded customization, and fresh neighborhoods.
The developers behind The Lord of the Rings Online recently did a Housing Q&A session with D&Co du Milieu, offering fans a closer look at ongoing improvements and long-term plans for one of the free-to-play MMORPG’s systems that’s more than just a side activity to many players. Matt “Scenario” Elliott, senior world designer, and Saraphina “Celestrada” Brennan, product manager, shared insights into upcoming features and technical challenges.
One of the main topics was the transition from Housing Rits to Homesteading Coins. The old system had led to stockpiling and economic imbalances, while the new currency provides stability and more flexible ways for players to engage with housing. Both developers emphasized that data analysis has been central to shaping these changes, helping the team make a strong case for continued investment in the system.
The conversation also touched on player requests like multiple kinship homes, customizable mannequins, and apartment-style housing. While many of these ideas remain limited by engineering resources, Elliott and Brennan confirmed that Rivendell Homesteads are in development, featuring three house types and improved hook flexibility for decorating.
Neighborhood expansion remains automated, with new instances rolling out as current ones fill. The developers also expressed interest in expanding customization options — such as wall and floor paints or rotational housing market items — to keep the system fresh.
