13 Things I Would Change In MapleStory Classic World

Nostalgia alone can only carry the old-school experience so far.

Finally, Nexon has officially unveiled MapleStory Classic World — a fresh experience aimed at longtime fans of the iconic free-to-play MMORPG. While excitement is high, expectations are higher, as nostalgia alone can only carry the game so far. Thus, to ensure the old-school gameplay feels authentic yet modern, improvements are necessary. Here are some practical, realistic changes I believe would enhance the experience.

1. Instanced Party Quests

Instead of the original system where players had to compete for a channel to run Party Quests, there should be an instanced system. This way, players form a party and immediately enter the PQ. No more waiting around, and no more tracking the competition.

2. Auction House or Accessible Player Shops

A basic auction house system would make trading items for mesos easier. If not, player shops should be available to everyone without a paywall. We should not be charged NX to be able to do something so essential.

3. Include Pirates at Launch

The absence of Nautilus Harbor in teaser footage is concerning. Content starting out bare and being drip-fed is cool, but Pirates should be in from the beginning. They’re an Explorer and shouldn’t be excluded from the team just because Pirate isn’t a part of the original four (Warrior, Mage, Archer, Thief).

4. Improved Class Balance

Every class should be viable. Players shouldn’t feel bad for not picking popular choices like Dark Knight, Bishop, and Night Lord. Therefore, class balancing is certainly needed. All skills should be relevant — not filler — too, and we should be able to max all their skills by the end of each job tier.

5. UI Customization

The user interface shown in the teaser footage is ugly. Let us move the chat box and rearrange hotkeys, for instance. New MMOs that come out these days usually have this option. The old-school vibe would not be taken away, as the classic design from back in the day remains.

6. Remove Leeching Entirely

Leeching is bad, and nostalgia is a liar. Paying high-level players to train your character while you do nothing is lame. It destroys genuine progression and undermines party play. You should take a long, hard look in the mirror if you think otherwise. Leeching’s gotta go.

7. Eliminate HP/MP Washing

HP/MP washing is probably the most infamously punishing system in old-school MapleStory Maple. It cannot return, and everyone agrees with me here. (I think.) Instead, give classes better HP/MP scaling and/or make bosses do less damage. Players shouldn’t need to drop hundreds of dollars on AP Resets to survive the endgame.

8. Limit or Remove Teleport Rocks

Teleport Rocks kill exploration. Either remove them entirely or restrict their use to major towns and cities only. World travel is part of old-school MapleStory’s charm, so let’s not take that away. Just make boat rides and waiting times shorter so they’re still social without being too inconvenient.

9. No Gachapon, 2x, Cubes, Potential

Gachapon shouldn’t exist in Classic World. If it must, let Tickets be dropped from mobs (rarely) and/or be bought with mesos. Also, no Cubes and no Potential. Obviously. Also, no 2x EXP/Drop/Meso coupons in the Cash Shop. That’s straight-up pay-to-win bullshit that’ll ruin everything. Keep the Cash Shop cosmetic-only.

10. Remove Claw Punching and Bow Whacking

Nobody misses smacking monsters with a Bow or Crossbow, or punching them with a Claw. Forget about class flavor. It gets old. Fast.

11. Drop Gender Restrictions on Gear and Cosmetics

There’s no good reason for gender-locked items to still exist, especially when certain Male/Female-only gear is better. Just let everyone wear what they want. Same goes for cosmetics, because why not?

12. Keep 1x EXP, Meso, and Drop Rates — But Make It Worth It

Half the fans want 2x rates, but I’m in the other half that wants 1x. I’m fine with standard EXP, Drop, and Meso rates if Nexon improves class skills, respawn timers, and party synergies. With better balance, players will stick around for the grind, and it’ll feel like the rates are 2x. Sorta.

13. Retain 90-Day Expiry on Cash Items

I don’t necessarily like the 90-day timer on pets and cosmetics. But Nexon’s gotta make money somehow. If the Cash Shop is void of pay-to-win nonsense, I can accept the tradeoff for non-permanent cosmetics that last just three months. It’s basically a soft subscription.
