Blizzard May Be Being Sued Again, This Time Over Hearthstone Card Packs
Once again, a kid spent a good bit of their parents' money on a game without permission.
As if Blizzard doesn’t have enough trouble, it’s now looking at another potential lawsuit. This time a parent is suing the company over Hearthstone card packs claiming his child didn’t know the odds of getting good cards or that the money is non-refundable. The result of this, according to the complaint, is that the child spent over $300 between 2019 and 2021 using her father’s credit and debit cards – without permission.
The complainant’s lawyer believes that this issue falls under the California Family code and the ability for a minor to “dis-affirm contracts”. They also note that Blizzard does not make the odds of obtaining high-end cards available publicly nor have they implemented “parental control features” to prevent minors from spending their parent’s money without permission. Both of these are issues as the complainant, Nathan Harris, from Arizona, attributes the high spending to his daughter trying to obtain more valuable and rare cards.
Harris’s lawyer is asking the court to grant the case class-action status, opening it up to other minors and parents who may have been impacted by the same practices. The lawyer believes the numbers could be in the hundreds or thousands.
Note: Activision Blizzard is still under investigation by the state of California for serious harassment charges. CEO Bobby Kotick is alleged to have known about such actions within his company – and performed some himself – and shielded the perpetrators from consequences.
