Today, a buddy of mine sent me a link to a post on r/MMORPG stating that a Tree of Savior player “won” an ultra-rare Legend Card: Shining Blue Boruta for opening $100,000 worth of Leticia Cubes. This was during a run of Leticia’s Secret Cube that spanned from May 6 to May 19.

If you’re not sure what this is all about, the free-to-play MMORPG ran a special reward event during that period that granted players a special item for every 50 cubes they opened. Prizes were pretty varied and consisted of items players could use in the game.

Interestingly, there doesn’t appear to be any news about this on the game’s main site. That being said, it’s not something that would actually surprise me. We’ve seen players spend $10,000 on a single sword in a game before. Yes, this is ten times that amount, but it’s multiple purchases of smaller items that add up.

Not surprisingly, the post is attracting discussion on the current monetization practices of free-to-play offerings – as well as the spending habits of players. Whatever your opinion on the matter, $100k is a lot of money, and I don’t know of any other player who’s spent that much on loot-box-like items in so short an amount of time.

And then, of course, you have to wonder if it’s worth it when any live service game could be shut down at some point, leaving you without the item you spent all that money to get.
