PvP and MMORPG? Name a more iconic duo.

Old World Labs announced "Abyss", an MMORPG that blends magic and technology within an open world. Set in an ever-evolving sandbox environment, the game is characterized by its fusion of fantasy and science fiction due to inter-dimensional gates that have emerged across the landscape. These gates disrupt the world's equilibrium by introducing elements from various eras and realms.

One feature to note is the Generative Quest System, which tailors the narrative to each player's actions, ensuring a unique and immersive questing adventure. Players can gather resources from the surroundings and utilize them to craft potent items, weapons, and armor. Abyss emphasizes crafting professions, allowing players to master various trades and become esteemed artisans.

There’s also an in-game economy. Players can buy, sell, and trade items with one another, utilizing their economic prowess to accumulate wealth, establish thriving businesses, and significantly influence the game's economic landscape through a player-driven economy. PvP elements are integral to the game too, whether battling against other players in the open world sandbox or in dedicated arenas. Players can also create and join guilds, engaging in guild warfare for supremacy, and experience large-scale battles for control over open-world territories.

Abyss is set to launch on PC via Steam Early Access, though a release date was not specified (early access in April 2024), but you can wishlist the game now on Steam. You can also buy cash shop currency already...which is a bit weird to say the least.

It's also worth mentioning that while the game's site doesen't expressly mention blockchain technology or Web3 gaming, it does indicate "asset ownership" when briefly discussing the "Crafters' Ecosystem" aspect of the game. "In Abyss Online, the "Crafters' Ecosystem" empowers players to craft, customize, and truly own their Abyss assets, leaving a unique imprint on the game world," says the game's site...so we'll see.

(EDITOR'S UPDATE: The Abyss team graciously took the time to respond in the comments below to point out that the "Crafters' Ecosystem" is modeled more like Roblox or Fortnite where creators can create assets for the game and pointed out the game is NOT based on Web 3 or blockchain technology.

That said, friends of MassivelyOP did some digging and found that Abyss is a reworked version of a previously announced Crypto MMO called Metagates and while we're certainly fans of going in a "non-NFT" direction, this really should have been called out in the press release from Abyss to be transparent.)

The Crafter's Ecosystem draws inspiration from the creator ecosystems of games like Fortnite and Roblox by providing players opportunities to shape more than just their gameplay experience but the underlying game environment. Over 50 community members have already contributed asset creations that have been incorporated into Abyss Online.

This is not a blockchain or Web 3 game.
