Star Wars: The Old Republic Is Testing 64-Bit On The PTS While Looking Back On 11 Years
Players are encouraged to jump on and offer feedback.
You can’t stop progress – maybe only slow it down a little. But sooner or later time marches on and if you don’t keep up, you’re left on a dusty planet somewhere out in space. That’s not the place you want to end up when you’re an MMO based on an incredibly popular IP. In its 11th year, and 12 years after the last 32-bit processor was released, Star Wars: The Old Republic is getting a 64-bit makeover.
What that effectively means for the game and for its players is that SWTOR will be set for a future where 32-bit no longer exists. Since that future draws ever closer with each Windows iteration, it’s a good move. It also means that if any of you are still running on 32-bit machines for some reason, you’re going to need to fix that if you want to keep playing. But, since you’ll eventually need to fix it if you want to keep using a computer, it’s probably not that big of a deal.
This also means that some of the limits the game has been working under based on the 32-bit version will be lifted, and that means it should make the developer’s work a little bit easier. For players, there shouldn’t be too much noticeably different and the game should work the same as it has.
This upgrade is one of several things that Keith Kanneg spoke about in his letter celebrating the 11th anniversary of Star Wars: The Old Republic. Other things mentioned are plans for modernizing not just the game, but the forums and launcher. There’s also work being done to improve the pace of content.
