SWTOR handed off to Broadsword from Bioware

According to a report by IGN, Star Wars: The Old Republic developer BioWare is nearing an agreement that would see them hand off the development of SWTOR to Broadsword Online Games, the current developers of Dark Age of Camelot and Ultima Online.

Per the report, a letter of intent has been signed and the deal could be finalized as soon as this month. EA would stay on as publisher of Star Wars: The Old Republic.

EA later addressed this report with the following statement:

“Almost 12 years after launch, Star Wars: The Old Republic remains a success and continues to grow its dedicated and passionate community. We’re so proud of the work the team has done, and the future of the game and the community continues to be very bright. We’re evaluating how we give the game and the team the best opportunity to grow and evolve, which includes conversations with Broadsword, a boutique studio that specializes in delivering online, community-driven experiences. Our goal is to do what is best for the game and its players.”

Some of the current SWTOR development staff would move over to Broadsword, while others would find new work within BioWare or possibly face layoffs.

The move is reportedly so that BioWare can shift its main focus back to single-player games such as Mass Effect and Dragon Age, both of which have new games under various stages of development.
