Avatar Reckoning Announcement

If you’re one of those, “MMOs are dying,” folks, it would seem that Disney and Tencent would disagree with that. Although, they’re putting their bets on mobile rather than PC and consoles – at least for this project. Over the weekend, the two companies announced plans for a mobile Avatar MMO titled “Avatar: Reckoning.” (We’re talking about the James Cameron blue aliens Avatar, not the air bending one.)

According to the announcement, the game will take players to Pandora, where they will explore areas not seen in previous media. Players will meet new clans of Na’vi, fight the RDA, and engage in general sci-fi activities like meeting aliens. If you’re wondering, players will be taking on the role of a Na’vi, which can be leveled up and equipped through the games’ story – like most MMOs.

On the tech end of things, the game is being developed on Unreal Engine 4. It’s expected to be available on iOS and Android and is being developed by Archosaur Games. As noted, it’s mobile-only, but as seems to happen with mobile MMOs, there is always the possibility it’ll end up on other platforms at a later point – provided it’s popular enough to warrant it.
