Fortnite Peaceful Hips

Epic Games has removed the “Peaceful Hips” emote from Fortnite following controversy sparked by the latest episode of James Gunn’s DC Comics show “Peacemaker.” The emote was originally based on Peacemaker’s dance moves from the Season 2 opening sequence, where John Cena’s character performs a goofy routine. While initially perceived as lighthearted, apparently the newest episode gave the move an entirely different and disturbing connotation.

It was revealed that Peacemaker had unknowingly been living in an alternate reality where America lost World War II and Nazis rose to power, creating a “utopia” populated exclusively by white citizens. The imagery of this dimension, including altered American flags bearing swastikas, recontextualized the emote in a way that linked it to fascist overtones. Observers also noted that the dance bore an uncanny resemblance to a satirical routine Donald Duck performs in the 1942 anti-Nazi propaganda cartoon “Der Fuehrer’s Face.”

Epic Games said players of the free-to-play battle royale would receive refunds if the emote did not return. Why this controversial emote made it into the game in the first place is unknown. The collaboration was likely arranged before the episode aired, raising questions about oversight from Warner Bros.

James Gunn himself has yet to comment publicly on the issue, though he previously promoted the emote earlier this month.
