SuperData: Rocket League Tripled Its Players In September After F2P Move
The September Digital Games Report from SuperData is now in the wild, and the market research firm has glowing things to say about Psyonix and Rocket League's free-to-play transition late in the month. SuperData claims a 193% increase in player numbers, while revenue for the last week of September, after the switch, was equal to what the game made in the first three weeks of the month.
That strong start to the new era of Rocket League wasn't enough to get it listed on SuperData's top 10, however, which contains the usual other free-to-play suspects: League of Legends, World of Tanks, Roblox, and Fortnite, with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare slipping into the back end of the PC chart, probably due at least in some part to the free-to-play Warzone experience.
Meanwhile, the free-to-play mobile version of Among Us was credited with having "nearly as many players as Pokémon Go did during the peak of its popularity in August 2016." Even with that kind of boost, it still didn't crack the top 40 mobile games in terms of revenue but it's still "extremely high for a game made by only three developers."
